Most families start with reputation — rankings, conference names, school size. But fit for a recruited soccer player is four separate questions, each of which can make or break the decision.

Athletic level comes first: is the program's competitive level realistic for your player, and is there a genuine opening at their position? Division I is right for some; Division III or NAIA may offer more playing time, a better academic environment, and real scholarship money. Club level and honest self-evaluation matter more than ambition.

Academics and real cost follow. A school's net price — what your family actually pays after aid — often bears little resemblance to the sticker price. Location preference is personal but real: distance from home affects consistency in ways coaches have seen derail promising recruits.

Most recruiting relationships fail quietly. A player sends a strong first email, a coach responds warmly — and then nothing. The follow-up slips. The window closes. The coach fills the roster with players who stayed present.

Managing college coach outreach means tracking dozens of relationships simultaneously, each at a different stage of interest. The failure modes are universal: forgetting who responded, not knowing when to follow up, misreading a warm reply as stronger interest than it was.

A structured pipeline — with a clear status for every coach and a follow-up schedule — keeps nothing off the board. Players who treat recruiting like a process, moving coaches through stages with consistent communication, sign more often.

A target list is not a wish list. The most common mistake families make is building a list anchored to dream schools — programs far above the player's current level — while leaving too little room for realistic targets and genuine safeties.

A balanced list works across three tiers: reach schools where the player is on the edge of qualification, target schools where fit is strong and an offer is plausible, and likely schools where the player would thrive and the program would be glad to have them. Each tier needs representation.

List-building also requires honest assessment of the player's current level, a view of where they're trending, and a read on which programs have openings at the right position. A list built on real data — not hope — produces better outcomes.

College soccer recruiting follows a timeline, and the timeline matters. Division I coaches can make informal contact on September 1st of a player's sophomore year. By junior year, most serious programs have filled significant portions of their incoming class. Families who start late work against a narrowing window.

Understanding the process also means knowing the pathways: Division I, II, and III operate under different rules for scholarships, contact periods, and signing dates. NAIA and JUCO programs offer viable routes that many families dismiss without fully understanding what each level offers — and demands.

How coaches evaluate players, what a highlight video needs to accomplish, how to read genuine interest versus politeness, and what questions to ask on a campus visit are all learnable. Families who understand the process move faster and make fewer avoidable mistakes.
