Recruiting Guide

Everything a family needs to know about college soccer recruiting.

An honest guide to fit, coach communication, building the right school list, and understanding the process — with the tools to act on it.

Common questions.

When should I start the college soccer recruiting process?

Earlier than most families expect. Serious programs fill significant portions of their incoming class by a player’s junior year. Building a school list and learning how the process works in freshman or sophomore year puts you ahead of the window, not behind it.

How do I know if a college soccer program is the right fit?

Fit comes down to four questions: Is the program’s competitive level realistic for your player, and is there a real opening at their position? Does the school’s academic profile match? What is the actual net price after aid — not the sticker price? And does the location work for your family? Reputation and conference name are secondary to all four.

What’s the difference between D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO soccer?

The divisions differ in competitive level, scholarship rules, and roster size. D1 and D2 programs can offer athletic scholarships; D3 schools cannot, but often provide strong academic and need-based aid. NAIA programs are smaller and frequently overlooked, but they offer athletic scholarships and real playing time opportunities. JUCOs provide a two-year pathway that can lead to a four-year transfer. The right level depends on an honest read of the player’s current ability and trajectory.

How should I communicate with college coaches?

Treat it as a tracked process, not a one-time email. Assign a status to every coach on your list, follow up consistently, and personalize your outreach. Coaches fill rosters with players who stay present — a warm first email followed by silence is one of the most common ways recruiting relationships fail quietly.
